The Bible Is God’s Journal
How can I know God?
This is an age-old questions, isn’t it. On the one hand, most of us would probably say that we know about God, but do we really know God?
How do you get to know someone?
Well, one of the best ways to learn about someone is to spend time with them. However, it’s not that easy with God because it’s not like you can physically sit down with Him and have a two-way conversation across the dinner table; or with the two of you sitting in an easy chair in the front room; or even walking side-by-side down a country road enjoying the scenery.
God speaks to us through other people. I think all of us have had that experience when someone says just the thing that you needed to hear.
God also speaks to us through nature.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Ps 19:1 (KJV)
The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory. Ps 97:6 (KJV)
I don’t know about you, but I want to know God more intimately.
Well, imagine with me for a moment that someone very close to you—a father perhaps—had died when you were an infant. (Perhaps some of you don’t have to imagine it, and for that, I am sorry.) How badly would you want to know that person? You would want to talk with people who had known him. You would want to know how he looked, how he acted, what things made him happy and sad.
Now, imagine that he had written in journals about his life and those journals contained all the information that you craved. He had written about his past, about his family, his friends. He had written all about his likes and dislikes. He had journaled all his hopes and dreams for both himself and for the people he loved…including you. He journaled about what he believed was the best way to live life.
How precious would those words be to you? Those words your only solid connection to this person that you could not touch, or see, or talk to; but that you knew beyond the shadow of a doubt did exist and did love you.
Would you read them every day? Would you study them? Would you try to read between the lines and learn more and more about him by comparing one part of his journals with another? Would you read them when you were young and then read them again when you were older and realize that you had a different understanding now that you had lived a bit?
Would those journals be important to you?
What is the Bible, then? Is it not God’s journal. Is it not a book full of God’s likes and dislikes; His love for you; His hopes and dreams for your life; instructions on how best to live?
Read your Bible today in a different light and get to know God.
