You Have The Measure of Faith
Understanding faith has been a hard thing for me. I have struggled with it for most of my Christian life.
First, I didn’t really know about faith. I went many years without really thinking about it. I just muddled through my Christian life and I didn’t really experience life much differently from other non-believers around me.
As I got older, I started really listening to the pastor’s sermon on Sunday morning. I spent a lot of time in church and I would take notes and try to listen and understand, but I didn’t often think of God outside of church.
Then, I started listening to teaching tapes. I learned a great deal about God and about faith that way. I also learned how to study the Bible on my own. There have been times in my life when I spent a great deal of time digging into the Word and learning about faith and other things for myself; listening to teaching tapes and learning from other who had the gift of teaching. But, I still struggle with consistency in my study. (It is the bane of my existence! I’m getting better, though.)
Recently, I’ve been thinking about faith again. I have realized that I already have all the faith that I’m ever going to have.
Now, I’m going to say some things that many of you will have trouble believing, but I urge you to read the scripture and allow it to plant a seed in your heart that God can grow.
As I said before, we have all been given “the measure of faith.” Romans 12:3 says:
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. KJV
This verse doesn’t say that we have been given a measure of faith, but the measure of faith. There is a difference.
Imagine that you were serving soup in a lunchroom. People were coming through your line, and to every person, you gave them a bowl with a ladle full of soup. You used the same ladle for every person who came through the line and you filled the ladle so that every person received the measure of soup.
Later, (if you’re anything like me
) you decided you were getting bored of using the same old ladle, so you get creative. One would come and you give them a ladle full of soup. Then next person would come and you would used a large serving spoon to give them soup. Then, the next person would come and you would use a teaspoon to give them soup. You are using a measure…a different measure every time.
We are all given the measure of faith. We all have the same amount. You can stop praying for more faith because you don’t need more faith.
I’m letting that sink in for a while. I’m thinking about what it means to have the same amount of faith as did Paul, or Peter, or George Müller. What an awesome truth!
But, this begs the question. If I have the measure of faith, why don’t I see it work in my life like it worked in the lives of others? Stay with me while I explore that, won’t you?
God bless you in your journey!

Dear Tamera,
This is a good question and a good lesson. I think it’s because we don’t exercise the faith we do have and we back off, quit or give up on what God has promised. Ephesians 6 says we are in a fight and we sometimes throw down the shield of faith! God is still faithful and will help us get back on track.
love in Christ,

Elaine,
That is exactly right. We sometimes find ourselves praying, “Father, give me more faith,” when we’re not exercising the faith that we have.
I hope to talk a bit about the rules that govern faith in the next few days.
I hope it will spark some lively discussion and maybe we can all learn a bit about faith.
